Welcome! As a brand new business, you have a massive advantage: a clean slate. You don't have to clean up years of messy, inconsistent data across the internet. By following this checklist, you will establish a perfect, highly-trusted citation profile from day one — setting the stage for strong Google Maps rankings as your business grows.

Define Your Exact Business Name

Decide exactly how your name will appear online. "Joe's Plumbing" and "Joe's Plumbing LLC" are seen as two different businesses by Google. Pick one and stick to it permanently.

Choose Your Address Strategy (Public vs. Hidden)

If you have a physical storefront, use that address. If you work from home or go to your clients, you are a Service-Area Business. You will verify with Google using your real address, but hide it from the public and display a service area (e.g., "Tampa, FL") instead.

Secure a Permanent Local Phone Number

Do not use a temporary cell number or a tracking number for your main citations. You need one permanent, local phone number that will represent your business across the entire web.

Record Your "Master NAP" Data

Write your exact Name, Address, Phone, and Website here. Copy and paste this exact formatting into every directory.

Business Name
Address / City
Phone Number
Website URL

Create & Verify Google Business Profile (GBP)

This is the single most important listing on the internet. Go to google.com/business. Fill out every section completely, upload photos, and complete the verification process (usually a postcard or video verification).

Claim Your Apple Maps Listing

Millions of people use iPhones to search for local businesses. Go to business.apple.com to claim your listing. Apple supports service-area businesses without displaying a street address.

Set Up Bing Places for Business

Bing powers voice search for Alexa and Cortana. Go to bingplaces.com. Use their "Sync with Google Business Profile" feature to copy your perfect Google data directly into Bing automatically.

Create a Facebook Business Page

Even if you don't plan to post often, a Facebook page acts as a massive trust signal to Google. Ensure your About section matches your Master NAP exactly.

Set Up a Yelp Business Page

Yelp data feeds into Apple Maps and dozens of other smaller directories. You can set yourself up as a service-area business if you don't want your address public.

Create a LinkedIn Company Page

Highly authoritative, especially for B2B or professional services. Link it to your personal LinkedIn profile for added trust signals.

Submit to the Major Data Aggregators

Data aggregators (Foursquare, Data Axle, Neustar Localeze) act like wholesalers of business data. Submit your info to them once and they distribute it to hundreds of smaller directories automatically over the next few months.

Submit to Industry-Specific Directories

Find the top 3–5 directories specific to your industry (e.g., Avvo for lawyers, Houzz for contractors, Healthgrades for doctors) and ensure you are listed with consistent NAP data.

🕐 What Happens Next?

Citations are a long game. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for Google to discover your new listings, and 3 to 6 months of consistent data for Google to build enough trust to start moving you up in the Maps rankings. The key is patience — and never changing your core NAP data once it is set.
