What is a Citation Audit?
A citation audit is a report that scans the entire web to find every place your business Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) appears online — and compares it against your top competitors. The result tells us exactly how many listings you have, how many you are missing, and how that gap is affecting your Google Maps ranking right now.
1
Rank #1–3
Top of the Map Pack. Customers can find you easily from this location.
4
Rank #4–7
Just outside the top 3. Visible but rarely clicked. Improvement is close.
8
Rank #8–14
Buried on page 2. Most customers never scroll this far. Revenue is being lost.
15
Rank #15–20
Effectively invisible. Customers searching from this area cannot find you at all.

Not Ranked
Google does not show your business for this keyword in this area whatsoever.
What to Look for in Your Report
- Your citation count — the total number of places online where your business information appears.
- Competitor citation count — how many listings the #1 ranked business in your area has.
- The gap — the difference between their count and yours. This is the number we need to close.
- Missing directories — specific platforms (Yelp, Angi, BBB, etc.) where your competitor is listed but you are not.
- Inconsistent listings — places where your name, address, or phone number is slightly wrong, which confuses Google.
What the Competitor Comparison Shows
- Why they outrank you — more citations = more trust signals sent to Google, which directly lifts their Map Pack position.
- Exactly which directories to target — we do not guess; we build citations on the same platforms that are already working for your top competitor.
- How quickly you can catch up — citation gaps of 10–30 listings can typically be closed within 30–60 days with a focused effort.
- Your realistic ranking potential — once your citation count matches or exceeds the competitor, your ranking will follow.
Important: A high citation count alone is not enough — every listing must show the exact same Name, Address, and Phone number. Even small differences (e.g., "St." vs. "Street", or an old phone number) send conflicting signals to Google and can actively hurt your ranking. Our audit flags every inconsistency so we can fix them.
1
Run the Audit
We scan your business and your top competitor to get an accurate citation count for both.
2
Find the Gap
We identify every directory where your competitor appears that you do not, and every listing where your information is wrong.
3
Build & Fix
We create new listings on the missing directories and correct any inconsistent information across the web.
4
Track Progress
We re-run the audit monthly to confirm new citations are indexed by Google and monitor your ranking improvement.
Common Questions
- "How many citations do I need?" — Enough to match or beat your top local competitor. There is no universal number; it depends entirely on your market.
- "How long until I see results?" — Most businesses see measurable ranking movement within 30–90 days of closing the citation gap.
- "Do I need to do anything?" — No. We handle everything. You just review the before-and-after report.
- "Is this a one-time fix?" — We recommend a quarterly check to catch any new inconsistencies or new competitor activity.
What a Healthy Audit Looks Like
- Citation count equal to or greater than the top-ranked competitor in your area.
- 100% consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all listings — no variations.
- Presence on the top 20–30 industry-relevant directories for your business type.
- No duplicate listings that could split your authority and confuse Google.
- An active, fully completed Google Business Profile linked to all citations.
